Technology is a tool, but the teacher is the real creative force behind instruction by providing a wide range of tools and experiences to help students learn to read and write effectively. This workshop will feature a full variety of technology tools, from the very simplest to the highest tech, which will help your students be more successful and organized readers and writers. We’ll explore color, orientation and simple tracking assistance. We’ll look at pens, pencils, grips and special papers as well as writing guides. Mid-tech tool choices in literacy will include digital and tape recorders, spell checkers and dictionaries, scanning pens, portable word processors, and Talking Photo Album storybooks. We’ll briefly talk about ways to adapt books with technology including using the Bookworm and PowerPoint as well as labeling books with picture word symbols. We’ll also learn how children can write “mini” books using the free PocketMod software. When we move to high tech, we’ll explore the major categories of reading and writing software for students this age, comparing programs by features and providing you with a framework to use in choosing the best software for each of your students.
