Technology and Literacy 7-12

The demands for literacy are overwhelming by this point in a student痴 education, but there still are a wide variety of tools that can help a student be a more organized, independent, and success reader and writer. We値l explore color, orientation and simple tracking assistance. We値l explore the use of color for reading, find out how much orientation can affect reading, and compare hand-held spell checkers, dictionaries, reading and scanning pens. We値l look at portable word processors most appropriate for use with older students, and look at the role of digital and tape recorders for some written tasks. In terms of software, we値l explore the different categories of writing and organization software by comparing features and then carefully look at text reading on the computer vs. books on tape/CD. We値l look at commercially available software with high interest and low readability and examine the avenues for getting the e-texts you need into the computer and choosing the best text reader. Finally, we値l look at a number of programs and strategies which will help you modify texts for students who have a variety of special needs.
